welcome to fire or fire starter with your friend a。d。。 today on the chopping block is the tiktok recommended novel: 101 essays that will change the way you think (sins already for such a long title)。 i will be blunt with you all as per usual: this is a fire starter。 i should have just read a cosmo or flipboard article instead。 all of these essays were things i already knew, i just said them in less words - example: “101 things more worth thinking about than whatever’s consuming you” - what do yo welcome to fire or fire starter with your friend a。d。。 today on the chopping block is the tiktok recommended novel: 101 essays that will change the way you think (sins already for such a long title)。 i will be blunt with you all as per usual: this is a fire starter。 i should have just read a cosmo or flipboard article instead。 all of these essays were things i already knew, i just said them in less words - example: “101 things more worth thinking about than whatever’s consuming you” - what do you think is in here? focus on you and healing you; or rather, “the parts of yourself you need to work on, not because someone doesn’t love them, but because you don’t。” wowww wasn’t that just a lot? did i not say that but in less word? i feel like i’m in an english class reading essays that have word limits and this book is really really REALLY reaching for that extra verbiage to get to that limit。 at the end i gave up and just skimmed :/ (it do be like that no?)。 save your money - download flipboard instead。 。。。more

This was a pretty solid book and I ended up highlighting quite a bit。 My only complaint would be that at times you KNOW it's written by a white woman and if you're not a white woman yourself, that advice does not being as mind-blowing as it is written to be。 Still, the author acknowledges it at parts by specifically referring to Americans (Caucasians would be more suitable though) so that's something This was a pretty solid book and I ended up highlighting quite a bit。 My only complaint would be that at times you KNOW it's written by a white woman and if you're not a white woman yourself, that advice does not being as mind-blowing as it is written to be。 Still, the author acknowledges it at parts by specifically referring to Americans (Caucasians would be more suitable though) so that's something 。。。more

Finding it odd that the reviews are nailing Brianna for her age - this is a self-help book。 101 Essays… is written by a young powerful women who shares her life tips with those who choose to pick up the book and sink themselves into her impactful words。 If you want a self-help book that shares basic quotes like “live, laugh, love”, you won’t find it here。 What you will find is a book filled with relatable ponders and anxieties but with a unique insight。 I’ve read many self-help books and Wiest’s Finding it odd that the reviews are nailing Brianna for her age - this is a self-help book。 101 Essays… is written by a young powerful women who shares her life tips with those who choose to pick up the book and sink themselves into her impactful words。 If you want a self-help book that shares basic quotes like “live, laugh, love”, you won’t find it here。 What you will find is a book filled with relatable ponders and anxieties but with a unique insight。 I’ve read many self-help books and Wiest’s is the best for many reasons。 Each chapter is divided by relatable aspects and broad stressors in life formatted with impactful passages followed by listed advice related to the chapters’ passage。 I’ve never felt more impacted by a self-help book。 I find myself going back and re-reading lines I underlined (many) and I genuinely do feel better after reading/re-reading her content and guidance。 Self-help books are kinda like therapists: you have to find one that speaks to you and works with you。 I’ll wrap it up by saying you’ll more likely than not find solace in Wiest’s words within these essays。 。。。more

There are some really good concepts in here but a lot of things are repeated throughout the book as well。

It's a good book, even tho like most of the comments said that it's repetitive, and yes I found it repetitive sometimes。 Also, I just don't like how some pages only contains of quotes。 But, there's something in this book that makes me think about my life。 I think when you're looking for a light reading, this might be suitable for you。Overall, it's a good book! I am not the demographic for this, but started it because a 20-something in my life promoted it as very insightful。 I hate the list format and felt like much was trite, obvious, and some snarky。 It is not my way of learning as I would prefer shorter narratives than statements。 I love quotes as one-liners to contemplate, and this felt like it trivialized good material by crowding it in this format。

Fluffy pop-psych nonsense with no basis in reality。

Loved this book!!! The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because a felt a few of the essays repeated themselves, so it could have really been '90 essays that will change the way you think', though that doesn't sound as good。 Brianna West really made me change my way of thinking while reading this and I quote this book almost every day now。 It really didn't disappoint。 The structure is great and it is very quick to get through。 It's a good book to pick up and put down a lot as each essay is ve Loved this book!!! I enjoyed parts of this book and found that I needed to use a lot of discernment because there were hints of toxic positivity and platitudes that are just not true in my personal experience sprinkled throughout。

I was impressed by the insightfulness of these essays。 Author Brianna Wiest keeps the essays from becoming platitudes with a strong grounding in philosophy and psychology。 I had many insights into my own mind and why I do things, as well as insights into the actions of people I know。 I listened to the audiobook, and now I want to buy a print copy for myself so I can spend more time with some of the essays that struck me the most。 I'd also like to buy extra copies so I can hand them out to people I was impressed by the insightfulness of these essays。 Author Brianna Wiest keeps the essays from becoming platitudes with a strong grounding in philosophy and psychology。 I had many insights into my own mind and why I do things, as well as insights into the actions of people I know。 I listened to the audiobook, and now I want to buy a print copy for myself so I can spend more time with some of the essays that struck me the most。 I'd also like to buy extra copies so I can hand them out to people I know! In the whole book, only one essay spoke to me; so much so that I made notes on it。 The rest felt either repetitive, contradictory or for those aimed in their twenties (some of the essay's even referred to this demographic)。 I was intrigued by the title of this essay, and I thought here is the book for me。 But what it actually feels like is a blog that has been turned into a book。 So many of the essays said the same thing or near enough, that if each essay came out once a week, I would not have n In the whole book, only one essay spoke to me; so much so that I made notes on it。 The rest felt either repetitive, contradictory or for those aimed in their twenties (some of the essay's even referred to this demographic)。 I was intrigued by the title of this essay, and I thought here is the book for me。 But what it actually feels like is a blog that has been turned into a book。 So many of the essays said the same thing or near enough, that if each essay came out once a week, I would not have noticed this。 Overall, not really the book for me, and disappointed by the lack of content。 。。。more

I hesitated because, right from the beginning, the author referred to the book Sapiens of Harari and claimed that the reason why homo sapien “won” over other sapiens is the prefrontal cortex。 She writes that the prefrontal cortex gives humans the ability to think。 This is not what the book Sapiens talked about。 The main idea of Sapiens is humans have the ability to believe in stories; that’s why we can cooperate and work together。 Yep, this is the very first few sentences of the book。 But I powe I hesitated because, right from the beginning, the author referred to the book Sapiens of Harari and claimed that the reason why homo sapien “won” over other sapiens is the prefrontal cortex。 She writes that the prefrontal cortex gives humans the ability to think。 This is not what the book Sapiens talked about。 The main idea of Sapiens is humans have the ability to believe in stories; that’s why we can cooperate and work together。 Yep, this is the very first few sentences of the book。 But I powered through to see if it deserves any hype from my Tiktok’s foryoupage。Nope。Even though what is written can be considered profound and wise, the book is just a collection of quotes。 I guess that’s why it is hyped on Tiktok? There is absolutely no context, no guiding story, no argument made。 It’s just purely quote material。 A skippable book but can serves as a source of inspiration on a dull day - food for thought of some kind。 。。。more

DNF。 like 101 buzz feed articles condensed into a book。 Was expecting insightful intellectual essays and was met with lists of pop psychology。

I was ear-reading this, and it just didn't pop。 Either because the narrator was flat, or just didn't use verbal cues to clarify when something was particularly important or when there was a shift of some sort。 It just sounded like lists of mundane statements。 I may try later to get a print copy to try again。 I was ear-reading this, and it just didn't pop。 Either because the narrator was flat, or just didn't use verbal cues to clarify when something was particularly important or when there was a shift of some sort。 It just sounded like lists of mundane statements。 I may try later to get a print copy to try again。 。。。more

Nope。 Not essays that will change the way you think。 Essays that say a lot of words without any real substance or original thought。 Vacuous is the word that kept coming to mind。 And the writing style isn’t even very creative or compelling to try to rescue the lack of content。 I’m normally a really soft critic but this one was just plain bad。

Lauren

Very repetitive, I ended up skipping a lot of essays that I found were rehashing the same information。

Baiba Bernāne

This book hit my brain so hard。 Right time- right place stuff and all that jazz。 Loved this book! Will be trying to get it in paper format because I need to write notes in the book, reread and relive the best parts again and again。。 and change the way I think!!

Natalie

Halfway through reading before deciding to stop。 Use of G-D。 Just not the book for me。

this went from a 4 to a 3 to a 2 over the course of these 'essays' (some are essay-like, some are really just lists or 'words of wisdom' type texts)。 i really wanted to like this book, and i started out feeling pretty hopeful during the first quarter or so, but as i continued through the chapters they became pretty repetitive, and there were quite a few ideas that i didn't really agree with, which isn't a problem in itself。 however, a lot of these ideas were pretty generalized to begin with and this went from a 4 to a 3 to a 2 over the course of these 'essays' (some are essay-like, some are really just lists or 'words of wisdom' type texts)。 i really wanted to like this book, and i started out feeling pretty hopeful during the first quarter or so, but as i continued through the chapters they became pretty repetitive, and there were quite a few ideas that i didn't really agree with, which isn't a problem in itself。 however, a lot of these ideas were pretty generalized to begin with and then treated as universal truths by the author ("all human beings do this" or "everything that's wrong is just because of your mindset" type of ideas) and the more chapters i read the more i felt disconnected from the author's view of life。 all in all, there were a few shorter texts that got to me, but as a whole it just wasn't for me。 。。。more

i started this book almost a year ago, referring to it here and there。 i liked the idea of scrolling to a random chapter and reading it when i thought i needed it the most。 fast forward to over a year later, and here i am, finishing the remnants of the remaining essays。 while i did feel like a good portion of the essays were platitudes, there were still pieces of advice that i tucked away。 overall, i wish there was more substance to these essays as opposed to paragraphs of empty phrases and chea i started this book almost a year ago, referring to it here and there。 i liked the idea of scrolling to a random chapter and reading it when i thought i needed it the most。 fast forward to over a year later, and here i am, finishing the remnants of the remaining essays。 while i did feel like a good portion of the essays were platitudes, there were still pieces of advice that i tucked away。 overall, i wish there was more substance to these essays as opposed to paragraphs of empty phrases and cheap, lofty advice。 。。。more
